Harvey, LA Real Estate: Harvey Canal neighborhoods, West Bank homes and how to buy or sell
A local brokerage’s guide to living, buying and selling in Harvey, the West Bank community built along the Harvey Canal.
Harvey sits on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish, between Gretna to the east and Marrero to the west, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. The 2020 Census counted 22,236 residents. Harvey is an unincorporated census-designated place, so Jefferson Parish Government handles permits and services. This guide covers what buyers and sellers ask us most.
Living in Harvey
- A canal town with history. The land was first a plantation of Jean-Baptiste d’Estrehan, and Joseph Hale Harvey later developed the area as a company town around the canal that now carries the family name.
- Parish services close by. The Jefferson Parish Public School System has its headquarters in Harvey, and the Jane O’Brien Chatelain West Bank Regional Library, opened in 1990, is the largest public library on the parish’s West Bank.
- Everyday convenience. Shopping, dining and services line the West Bank Expressway and Lapalco Boulevard.
- Close to the city and NAS JRB. The Crescent City Connection is about four miles northeast, and Belle Chasse and Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans are a short drive south. See our PCS to NAS JRB guide.
Areas and home styles to know
Along the Harvey Canal
The canal runs south from the Mississippi River and splits Harvey into east and west sides, with marine and industrial uses near the water and homes on the streets around them.
North of the Expressway
Older neighborhoods closer to the river, with ranch-style and raised homes from the mid-20th century onward.
Lapalco corridor
Subdivisions south of the Expressway around Lapalco Boulevard, heading toward Woodmere and Estelle.
Getting around
The West Bank Expressway (U.S. 90 Business) runs through Harvey toward the Crescent City Connection and downtown New Orleans. Crossing the Harvey Canal is part of almost every trip: Lapalco Boulevard has its own bridge over the canal, and the West Bank Expressway crosses it through the Harvey Tunnel. These crossings have had long repair and closure projects, so check current Louisiana DOTD and Jefferson Parish traffic notices before you plan a commute.
Flood zones and insurance
Harvey sits inside the West Bank hurricane levee system, with parish pump stations moving rainwater out. Flood zones still vary by street and elevation, especially near the canal. Check any address with our Flood Zone tool, ask for the elevation certificate, and get flood, wind and homeowners quotes during your inspection period. Unincorporated Jefferson Parish takes part in FEMA’s Community Rating System, and the parish announced an improved rating in 2025, which lowers NFIP premiums for eligible policies. See Flood Insurance Costs in Louisiana.
Schools
Public schools in Harvey are run by Jefferson Parish Schools, and the zoned school depends on the exact address. Some magnet and charter schools have their own admission rules. Use our School Zone tool, confirm with the district, and see official data on the Louisiana School Finder. We don’t steer buyers toward or away from neighborhoods; we give you the official sources so you can decide.
