Tangipahoa Parish runs north from Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi line. Hammond, home to Southeastern Louisiana University, anchors the south end, while the north end is rural, with acreage, farms and small towns. Its spot at the crossroads of I-12 and I-55 puts Baton Rouge, the Northshore and New Orleans within commuting distance.

Public schools

The Tangipahoa Parish School System runs the public schools across the parish. The zoned school depends on the exact address. Find it with our School Zone tool, confirm with the district, and see official performance data on the Louisiana School Finder. Louisiana changed its grading formula for 2026, so compare schools using the same year.

A note on how we talk about schools. We give you the official sources so you can judge schools for yourself. Fair housing laws mean we don’t steer buyers toward or away from neighborhoods, and we’ll help you search wherever you choose.

Flood zones and flood insurance

The Tangipahoa, Natalbany and Ponchatoula rivers and many smaller creeks run through the parish, and low areas near the lake can be in high-risk zones. Flood risk changes from one street to the next.

  1. Look up the FEMA flood zone with our Flood Zone tool or the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.
  2. Ask for the elevation certificate and any flood history, including the 2016 floods.
  3. Get flood and homeowners quotes during your inspection period. See Flood Insurance Costs in Louisiana.

Property taxes, homestead and permits

Louisiana assesses homes at 10% of fair market value, then applies local millage. On your primary residence, the homestead exemption removes the first $7,500 of assessed value, which is the first $75,000 of market value. Apply with the Tangipahoa Parish Assessor’s Office after you close; learn more in Louisiana Homestead Exemption and Property Taxes.

Homes inside Hammond, Ponchatoula, Amite City, Independence, Kentwood, Roseland, Tangipahoa or Tickfaw get permits from that municipality. Unincorporated areas go through Tangipahoa Parish Government. For rural property, confirm well, septic and access early.
