Public schools

St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools runs the public schools across the parish. The zoned school depends on the exact address. Find it with our School Zone tool, confirm with the district, and see official performance data on the Louisiana School Finder. Louisiana changed its grading formula for 2026, so compare schools using the same year.

A note on how we talk about schools. We give you the official sources so you can judge schools for yourself. Fair housing laws mean we don’t steer buyers toward or away from neighborhoods, and we’ll help you search wherever you choose.

Flood zones and hurricane protection

Parts of LaPlace and the east bank flooded from storm surge off Lake Pontchartrain during Hurricane Isaac in 2012 and Hurricane Ida in 2021. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is building the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain hurricane risk reduction project to protect the east bank. Ask about its status and the home’s history for any address you consider.

  1. Look up the FEMA flood zone with our Flood Zone tool or the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.
  2. Ask for the elevation certificate and any flood claim history.
  3. Get flood, wind and homeowners quotes during your inspection period. The parish takes part in FEMA’s Community Rating System, which lowers NFIP premiums. See Flood Insurance Costs in Louisiana.
  4. Plan for storm season with our Hurricane-Ready Home checklist.

Property taxes and the homestead exemption

Louisiana assesses homes at 10% of fair market value, then applies local millage. On your primary residence, the homestead exemption removes the first $7,500 of assessed value, which is the first $75,000 of market value. Apply with the St. John the Baptist Parish Assessor’s Office after you close. Learn more in Louisiana Homestead Exemption and Property Taxes. Permits for all homes go through St. John the Baptist Parish Government; ask whether past repairs and additions were permitted.
